National Geographic
I'm a big National Geographic fan. I consider it to be one of the top photography magazines ever. About a year ago I bought a National Geographic Bag for my camera. Funny thing, just because my bag says "Natonal Geographic" it makes some people (lots) think I shoot for National Geographic. I wish! The first time it happened was in the Panama Canal. Some guy with a Canon 5D was standing next to me and we were shooting and he nodded at my side and said "So, you're????" I asked "What?" He said "You know" and nodded at my side again. I looked and realized he was referring to National Geographic. I laughed and said "No, anyone can buy one of these." (Click here if you want one: National Geographic Bag
).
The only photographer I personally know who has been published in National Georaphic is Goran Saban. Goran's work appears in National Geographic Junior . Goran gave me an autographed copy of an issue with a piece he did did on cruise ships. Its a foreign language version so I can't read it but its cool anyway.
National Geographic has a web page as well as many books and magazines. The on-line version of National Geographic contains a photography section. One of the cool features is "Your Shot." Anyone is welcome to submit a photo to NG's "Your Shot." Everyday the editors choose twelve photos from those submitted that particular day . These twelve become "The Daily Dozen" and appear in an on-line photo gallery. At the end of the month the editors will choose two photos from the previous month's "Daily Dozen" for publication in National eographic. Pretty cool. Others may be chosen as NG wallpapers, puzzles etc. Still pretty cool.
Ok, so one day I took a good look at some of the photos in "The Daily Dozen" past and present. After seeing what type of photos seem to make it, I went through my library and picked a photo to submit. I really didn't expect anything as there are some really awesome photos submitted by photographers around the world. I decided to give it a try anyway and hoped if I keep trying maybe someday.... Well much to my surprise, I made it the very first time!
Look to the left side of this page for a small screen capture of "My Shot" on the NG site. If you would like to view it on the site itself click here. This will take you to "The Daily Dozen." Once there you can find me in "December - Week 2." I guess I can now say I live up to my camera bag somewhat !
