The Rock N Roll Collection: San Francisco Punk & New Wave

Way back (as in the 1980s) I used to shoot live music in the San Francisco Bay Area. We are talking film here. I used to push Tri-X to 1600 and process it in the kitchen sink. I scanned some of my old negs on a Noritsu 3001. They are pretty banged up (scratches etc) but still worth hanging on to.

Bonnie Hayes & the Wild Combo

Bonnie Hayes & the Wild Combo (Bonnie Hayes, Paul Davis, Hank Maniger and Kevin Hayes) were called The Punts when these particular shots were taken at The Keystone Berkeley in Berkeley, California. Two or three of these were published in KUSF's Wave Sector magazine thanks to my friend Del Taco. I'm not exactly sure but think these were my first photos ever published.

The Contractions

I don't even remember where or when I photographed The Contractions (Mary Kelley, Kathy Peck and Debbie Hopkins).. For some reason I think it was the On Broadway in San Fransico but who knows. In any case, these are the ten best. I do remember my friend Sammy setting me up to go over to one of the band members houses and shoot a practice. I have no idea where those negs are. Maybe I imagined it.

The Dead Kennedys

The Dead Kennedys (Jello Biafra, East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride and D.H. Peligro) were one of my favorite bands to photograph yet one of the most dangerous to photograph. Many of these shots were taken while being bashed around in the slam pit. It was crazy but worth it. The photo of Jello on the left appeared on the cover of Gold Coast Live Magazine in 1984. Although I call this collection "The Dead Kennedys," its more Jello than anything. I have some shots of the other guys but most of them appear to have been snapped when my body was being knocked across the floor.

Elements of Style

I probably photographed Elements of Style more than any other band. Over the years the band members changed. Ramona Torch (vocals) and David Barker (guitar) were always in the band. We became friends and David (an excellent graphic artist) used quite a few of my photos when designing band posters. EOS released a single called "Sacred Objects" and I took the photo for the back cover.

The Lloyds

Hmmm, I don't really know much about The Lloyds. The singer's name was Lulu and the bass player Peter (I think). They were one of the first bands I decided to shoot when I just went to shows and shot whoever was playing. Not even sure where I saw them. Berkeley Square maybe??? Keystone Berkeley???

The Mutants

The only time I had a chance to shoot The Mutants ( Fritz Fox, Sallier Webster, Sue White, Brenden Earley, John Gullak, Jim Hrabetin, Paul Fleming and Dave Carothers) was at Berkeley Square. Although I loved the intimacy of B Square, the lighting wasn't so great for shooting bands. Usually it was dim and red. Not good. As a result, I don't have as many shots of The Mutants as I'd like.

Romeo Void

Romeo Void (Deborah Iyall, Benjamin Bossi, Peter Zincavage, Peter Woods, Larry Cater, John Haines) at The Stone in San Francisco. This was the first time I saw Romeo Void. Translator opened. Both bands ended up signing with 415 Records. I am not sure but think this may have been after both were signed.

SVT

SVT (Brian Marnell, Jack Casady and Paul Zahl) at The KeyStone Berkeley. Jack also played in Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna. Paul played in Tuxedo Moon and the Flamin Groovies. Brian played in the Jim Carroll Band. He died in a car accident in1983.

Translator

Translator (Steve Barton, Robert Darlington, Larry Dekker and Dave Scheff) was a great band ahead of its time and very good friends of mine. This set consists of a few favorites taken at The Keystone Berkeley in Berkeley, CA and The Stud in San Francisco. Steve Barton is still recording and kicking out the cds. I've seen evidence of Dave and Larry still playing as well.

Xmas Eve

Xmas Eve (Bruce, Eric and Jermone) played The Mab, Berkeley Square and The Keystone Berkeley quite often. A few of these photos appeared on band posters. I have another set of Xmas Eve shots taken in the hills where it looks like we were in the desert. One of these was used on a insert in the band's 45 and published in BAM Magazine.

Note

I'm re-organizing the site. Here are links to some other photos that are in transit so to speak. Some will end up here and some on another page. Blurt, B-Team, Buddy Miles, The Fall, George Thorogood, Girl Can't Help It, J. Geils Band, Killing Joke, Lenny Kaye, No Sisters, The Nuns, The Ramones, The Rolling Stones, I have more and eventually will add them. A few ended up on posters and record covers. A few in zines. Ok, and then there is now. The digital age. I don't go to many shows but I decided to see if I still have the knack. Well, adusting to a digital slr with a slower lens is proving interesting, but I'll get it. I did manage to get a decent shot of Dominique Ava on a cruise ship. And then there was the Spanish Dogs tribute. Here's a shot or two of Johnny Tonite.
