The Elusive Book
I have been talking about doing a book for several years. I always get stuck when it comes to design and layout. I finally decided to hire a professional (Michael Chatham) and get it over with. I am proud to say that the book is done. A special Promo Copy of the book is currently available. I’m likely to be changing the cover as this version is not the cover we decided to go with. If so, this version will end up being a “Limited Edition.” The book is called “Eclypso: Photography by Catharine J. Anderson.” Here is a brief description of the book:
“A collection of over one hundred iconic high contrast black and white rock n roll portraits. The images were originally captured on Tri-X film pushed to ISO 1600 and later scanned on a Noritsu 3001.
The time was 1980 through 1982. The bands were mostly punk, new wave or power pop. The stage was the San Francisco Bay Area.
999, B-Team, Blurt, Chrome Dinette, The Contractions, The Dead Kennedys, Elements of Style, Girl Can't Help It, George Thorogood & the Destroyers, The J. Geils Band, Jo Allen & the Shapes, Killing Joke, The Lenny Kaye Connection, The Lloyds, The Mutants, No Sisters, The Punts (aka Bonnie Hayes & the Wild Combo), The Ramones, Romeo Void, Sparks, The Squares, The Rolling Stones, SVT, The Fall, The Nuns, The Varve, Translator, VKTMS, and Xmas Eve. “

San Francisco Punk & New Wave
Back in the late 70s and early 80s I had an opportunity to shoot a lot of “local bands” in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is a collection of some of my favorite shots. The bands are: B Team (Todd Stadtman, David Rubinstein, Greg Baker), Bonnie Hayes & the Wild Combo (Bonnie Hayes, Paul Davis, Hank Maniger, Kevin Hayes), The Contractions (Mary Kelley, Kathy Peck, Debbie Hopkins) , The Dead Kennedys (Jello Biafra, East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride, D.H. Peligro), Elements of Style (Ramona Torch, David Barker), Jo Allen & the Shapes (Jo Allen (Powell), Doug Hamblin), The Lloyds (Lulu, Ronnie, Peter Heimlich), The Mutants ( Fritz Fox, Sallier Webster, Sue White, Brenden Earley, John Gullak, Jim Hrabetin, Paul Fleming, Dave Carothers), No Sisters (Dave, Peter, Tom and Tim Barrett, Ed Berman), Romeo Void (Deborah Iyall, Benjamin Bossi, Peter Zincavage, Peter Woods, Larry Cater, John Haines), The Squares (joe Satriani, Andy Milton, Jeff Campitelli), SVT (Brian Marnell, Jack Casady, Paul Zahl), The Nuns (Jennifer Miro, Ritchie Detrick, Jeff Olener, Alejandro Escovedo), Translator (Steve Barton, Robert Darlington, Larry Dekker, Dave Scheff), The Varve (Jo Ann Gogue, Carolyn Stage (Crampton), Sue Digby, Kat Astrophe (Zumbach), Kelli Kozak), VKTMS (Nyna (Napalm) Crawford, John Binkov, Steve Ricablanca Louis Gwerder) and Xmas Eve (Eric Capers, Jerome Capers and Bruce Rayburn). Everything shot with my trusty Pentax ME and a 135mm Pentax Ashai telephoto lens on Tri-X film pushed to 1600.
The Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones (Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wood, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts) in concert at Candlestick Park in 1981. Shooting that was exhausting. Thousands of people crammed together. Heads in the way. Shot with my trusty Pentax ME and a 135mm Pentax Ashai telephoto lens on Tri-X film.
The Ramones
The Ramones (Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee) in San Francisco. Shot with my trusty Pentax ME and a 135mm Pentax Ashai telephoto lens on Tri-X film pushed to 1600.
The Dead Kennedys were a tough band to photograh. I was usually in the “pit” which meant I was getting knocked around alot. These photos are are from the 80’s meaning it’s the classic line-up: Jello Biafra, East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride and D.H. Peligro. Shot with my trusty Pentax ME and a 135mm Pentax Ashai telephoto lens on Tri-X film pushed to 1600.
J. Geils Band
The J. Geils Band (John Geils, Peter Wolf, Magic Dick and Danny Klein) opened for the Stones at Candlestick Park in San Francisco in 1981. Funkyjudge.net features a few of my shots in their on-line photo gallery collection. Here’s a link that will take you directly to “my” gallery. Shot with my trusty Pentax ME and a 135mm Pentax Ashai telephoto lens on Tri-X film .
The Nelson Brothers : “Ricky Nelson Remembered”
The Nelson Brothers - featuring Matthew Nelson, Gunnar Nelson and Neil Zaza. I stumbled on this show accidently. The show was a tribute to Ricky Nelson with a “Nelson” hair metal tune or two thrown in for good measure. I wasn’t prepared for this so I made due with what a had which was a rather “slow” Tamron 28-200mm zoom lens. I was shooting at f 5.6 at best. These were shot with a Pentax K100D.
Blurt and Killing Joke - I used to shoot a lot of shows at The Keystone Berkeley in Berkeley, California. Blurt and Killing Joke are two of the bands I shot. The “Blurt” photos are really just Ted Milton of Blurt. He was a very passionate study. Both shows were shot with a Pentax Me with a 135mm Pentax Ashai telepho lens on Tri-X film pushed to 1600 ASA (now known as ISO).
Lenny Kaye
A few photos of Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group) when he was touring with The Lenny Kaye Connection. These were shot at The Keystone Berkeley with a Pentax ME. Once again I was shooting with a 135mm Pentaz Ashai telephoto lens on Tri-X film pushed to 1600.
